So what do those rubber things that help get your car to soccer practice have to do with earthquakes?

Well...some people have become very creative about finding uses for old tires to keep them out of landfills. One idea is to flatten the tire and roll a bunch of them together making a sort of log. This log has been used as a building material and because of the rubber in old tires it helps buildings absorb some of the force of an earthquake lessening the amount of damage and keeping people safer.

What other uses can you think of for old tires, any ideas?

I saw this tv show where they used tires as shelves but my mom said it wasn't safe because of the fumes from it. Is that true?

There has been some research done on the use of tires in things like playgrounds, all this information has said that if used properly there are no known associated health risks from using tires. But like anything new we need more people to study it so we can recycle these materials with a good understanding of the best and safest ways to use them.
Thanks for your excellent question "Ranger Stephen"

they could use them as bumpers on the bottom of boats or in hockey arenas along posts to protect people.
Another use could be for the soles of shoes.

Great ideas, I have seen them used on boats and on docks before!
