How Howler Monkeys Howl

A group of veterinary students, called Global Vets, volunteered at a wild animal refuge near Coroico Bolivia where they discovered some amazing facts. Here’s what they learned about Howler monkeys.

Howler monkeys are noisy, which is how they got their name, they make these calls at dawn or dusk in large groups. They can create such an incredible (and very, VERY loud) sound thanks to an enlarged hyoid bone found in their throat. This hyoid bone basically acts as big resonator and allows the monkeys to communicate with each other across distances of over 3km.
