Polar bears, like all Arctic species, feel the effects of climate change every day. Thanks to your help over the year, researchers are getting a clearer picture of how melting sea ice is affecting Polar bears and will be putting that information to use to find a way to better protect them. Check out how you have helped make a difference for these kings of the Arctic.
Polar Bear Protectors
From September 2012 to August 2013, an astounding 22,000 kids signed up to protect the Polar bear. You worked hard, collected donations and some of you, like Super Ranger Elijah, even dedicated a section of your website to protecting the Polar bear and its home. Thanks to you, we know a lot more about the Polar bear and their home in the Canadian Arctic.
Did We Meet Our Goals?
As part of this year’s Bring Back the Wild project for the Polar bear, we set out to:
- Purchase five satellite collars and place them on Polar bears to learn more about their offshore movements
- Support Dr. Lunn and his team in their field work to learn about Polar bear diet and behaviour
We are happy to announce that we successfully met both of these goals! Back in September, we purchased five collars and Dr. Lunn and his team put them on five female Polar bears. Although one of the collars fell off, the other four gave great insight into how Polar bear movement and behaviour is effected by sea ice loss. We’re looking forward to sharing a final update from Dr. Lunn once he’s had a chance to review all of the amazing data he collected.
