While cruising underwater, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) stumbled across an explosive secret. Deep in the freezing water they found something unexpected: newly discovered underwater volcanoes.

In the waters around the South Sandwich Islands, 12 volcanoes were spotted; some reaching 3km in height. There is still a lot of research needed in order to figure out how erupting or collapsing underwater volcanoes may affect the ocean. The thing scientists do know is that these subsea landscapes create warmer water, making them great spots for many different species to call home.
