Unless you live in a forest surrounded by evergreen trees (if you do we’re totally jealous because that sounds really cool), winter might not have a “smell” like other seasons tend to. When there are no flowers growing and no fresh cut grass swirling around outside, coming home to a burst of cozy scents can be a real treat in the middle of the winter. And when it’s your own home, it can become a choose-your-own-adventure for your winter-nipped nose to come home to! A great way to DIY your favourite at-home scents can be to make your very own potpourri using natural ingredients!
Here are a few things you can use to experiment and create your signature winter scent:
- Collect some fresh needles from your favourite evergreen tree: pine, spruce, or hemlock are all great options to harvest needles from
- A piece of tree stump (the sappier the better)
- Cinnamon sticks
- Cloves
- Raw cranberries
- Orange slices or peels
- Dried or fresh peppermint leaves (hint: peppermint tea is often pure peppermint leaves)
- Dried or fresh rosemary
- Apple slices
- Cardamom
- Vanilla extract
- Grated nutmeg
Put your ingredients in a shallow heat-proof bowl or pot and add water halfway. Another great option is to use a mason jar, but poke holes in the lid to allow the scents to evaporate and escape. Place this in a warm place (safely away from any pets or clumsy family members) such as on top of a radiator, over part of a heating vent, or on the stove on the lowest setting if you’re using a pot.
Enjoy the woodsy winter scents filling your home!
I love homemade stuff!
It’s so fun to create
We do live in a Pine Spruce Hemlock and Larch forest! I planted more than 100 trees in 2020.
Thank you for all you do! Thank you to everyone!
I live in one too! Great job with all the trees! 100 is A LOT.
Smells nice
