Or that\nsome species can live to be over 80 years old? What about the fact that they\nhave existed for over 100 million years? That means they shared the planet with\ndinosaurs! These are some pretty fascinating creatures! But, here\u2019s one more\nnot-so-fun fact: <strong>out of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, six\nof them are either threatened or endangered.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/leatherback-turtle-swimming.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/leatherback-turtle-swimming.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/leatherback-turtle-swimming-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s\nhappening to the sea turtles? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, sea\nturtle populations are declining due to human activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sea\nturtles are likely to get tangled in fishing gear <\/li><li>They\nare affected by climate change<\/li><li>They\nare experiencing habitat loss<\/li><li>Turtles\naccidentally eat or get tangled up in plastic waste<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More\nplastic, more problems. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently one\nof the biggest problems that sea turtles are facing is eating or getting caught\nup in plastic garbage. Something like a plastic bag, which looks like a yummy\njellyfish, can be eaten by a sea turtle and make them very sick. A six-pack\nring can get caught around a sea turtle\u2019s neck. After hatching, baby turtles\nmay get lost in washed-up plastic on the beach before they can even make it into the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"257\" src=\"\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/more-plastic-more-problems-pictures.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/more-plastic-more-problems-pictures.jpg 446w, https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/more-plastic-more-problems-pictures-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><figcaption>&#8220;This looks yummy&#8230;&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Every\nyear, <strong>eight million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean,<\/strong> which is like dumping one whole garbage truck\nfull of plastic into the ocean every minute for a year! <\/li><li>More\nthan <strong>1,000<\/strong> sea turtles die every year due to <strong>plastic pollution<\/strong> <\/li><li>As\npollution increases, more turtles are likely to be entangled<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Single-use plastics<\/strong>\nsuch as plastic bags, straws, water bottles, plastic cutlery, and take-out\ncontainers are some of the biggest culprits when it comes to plastic pollution.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\nare single-use plastics? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Single use\nplastics, or <strong>SUPs<\/strong>, are plastics that we use just once and then throw\naway. Think about the times you used a plastic straw, cup, or water bottle to\nhave a drink. Have you eaten a meal from a takeout container using plastic\ncutlery? Did they all go straight into the garbage? Well, you\u2019re not alone.\nSUPs are everywhere! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>About\nhalf of all the plastic made is designed to be thrown away after <strong>one use<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>One\nmillion<\/strong> plastic drink bottles are purchased every minute\naround the world, and up to <strong>five trillion plastic<\/strong> bags are used every\nyear!<\/li><li>Not\nenough SUPs are recycled\u2014it turns out that <strong>90%<\/strong>\nof plastic waste hasn\u2019t been recycled or reused!<\/li><li>Just\nbecause you don\u2019t live near the ocean doesn\u2019t mean the plastic you use won\u2019t\nfind its way into the sea or other bodies of water.\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/plastic_bottles_beach_ocean.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13697\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/plastic_bottles_beach_ocean.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/plastic_bottles_beach_ocean-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.earthrangers.com\/EN\/CA\/wp-content\/uploads\/plastic_bottles_beach_ocean-631x420.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some\nGREAT news\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully,\nCanada is on track to ban all of those harmful SUPs as early as 2021! This\nincredible effort by the Canadian government will get us one step closer to\nprotecting the environment and our turtle friends of the sea!
