What species live near you? You won\u2019t know until you look!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world outside your window is filled with incredible plant and animal species, but the types you see depend on the habitats nearby. You probably won\u2019t be seeing a dolphin if you live near a desert, unless it\u2019s really gotten lost\u2014how would it even get there? Did it swim through the sand?! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this article, we\u2019re going to take a look at some common species that you might find in habitats near you! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you live near a forest…<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll see lots and lots of trees\u2014after all, trees are what make a forest a forest! You might also see moss, mushrooms, grasses, orchids, and ferns. Animals that live in forests include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • snakes<\/li>
  • owls<\/li>
  • woodpeckers<\/li>
  • red foxes<\/li>
  • bears<\/li>
  • moose<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    If you live near a wetland\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wetlands like these provide important habitat for Midland Painted Turtles.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    You\u2019ll see lots of tall grasses, reeds, rushes, shrubs and mosses. There will be water and lots of mud. You might also see trees and lilies. Animals that live in wetlands include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • salamanders<\/li>
    • frogs<\/li>
    • ducks<\/li>
    • dragonflies<\/li>
    • turtles<\/li>
    • herons<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      If you live near an ocean\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You\u2019ll see lots of salt water. There might be sand, rocks, coral, and lots of underwater plants like kelp, sea grass, and algae. Animals that live in and around oceans include: –<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • whales<\/li>
      • puffins<\/li>
      • sea otters<\/li>
      • crabs<\/li>
      • starfish<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        If you live near a desert\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        You will see plants scattered here and there, but there won\u2019t be a lot of them. They will be hardy plants that don\u2019t need a lot of water, like cacti and shrubs. Animals that live in deserts include: –<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • scorpions<\/li>
        • snakes<\/li>
        • lizards<\/li>
        • ants\u00a0<\/li>
        • vultures\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          If you live near a body of freshwater\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          You\u2019ll see lots of water. Similar to the wetland, you might see lilies, reeds, rushes and tall grasses. Animals that live in and around bodies of freshwater include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • river otters<\/li>
          • beavers<\/li>
          • turtles<\/li>
          • loons<\/li>
          • frogs<\/li>
          • fish<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            If you live near a mountain\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You\u2019ll see lots of rocks, mosses, lichens, and sedges. You might see trees, but there will be less and less of them the higher up you go. You might even get to see snow in the summer! Animals that live on mountains include: –<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • marmots<\/li>
            • mountain goats<\/li>
            • eagles<\/li>
            • pikas<\/li>
            • big horn sheep<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              If you live near a grassland\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              You\u2019ll see tall grasses and a few trees. You might see sagebrush, and even a cactus or two. Animals that live in grasslands include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • burrowing owls<\/li>
              • prairie dogs<\/li>
              • coyotes<\/li>
              • grasshoppers\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                If you live near the Arctic\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                You\u2019ll see lots of mosses and lichen. The plants will be short, even the trees, and you might see a few flowers, like the Arctic daisy and Arctic poppy. Animals that live in the Arctic include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • polar bears<\/li>
                • Arctic foxes<\/li>
                • seals<\/li>
                • ptarmigans\u00a0<\/li>
                • caribou<\/li>
                • belugas<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  There are so many species in these habitats that if we listed them all, we\u2019d be here forever! You won\u2019t know which ones you\u2019ll see, until you get outside and start exploring.
