Hello there! The name\u2019s Sandy, nice to meet\nyou! I\u2019m a mourning cloak butterfly. Normally butterflies like me are super\nquiet, but I just had to speak up. Now that spring is here, I\u2019ve overheard a\nlot of you talking about planting pollinator gardens. Everyone seems to be only\ntalking about flowers, but I have something important to say: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butterflies like trees too!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, I love a good flower as\nmuch as the next guy, but lots of you seem to forget that trees are also a\nbutterfly\u2019s BFF. Let me tell you why: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Trees are like a buffet for\nbutterflies! If I\u2019m feeling hungry, I\u2019ll have my choice of sap, nectar from the\nflowers or even fruit that\u2019s fallen to the ground. When I was just a young\ncaterpillar I also loved eating tree leaves! <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    • Trees are a great place for us\nto lay our eggs. When it\u2019s my time, I\u2019ll probably inspect the underside of each\nleaf to make sure its just right, but I might also use a loose piece of bark or\nsome mulch nearby. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      • Trees protect us from the wind\nand rain. This is a huge deal because we\u2019re very sensitive to the weather. We\ncan\u2019t fly when we get too wet, and get easily blown off course by a strong\nwind. But if we have a tree nearby, we can rest there safely until the storm is\nover. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        So, when you\u2019re planning your garden for\nthe year, do me favour: plant a deciduous tree or two! These are the ones that\nlose their leaves in the fall. They\u2019re our favourites, especially the ones that\ngrow flowers and fruit! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Now, I\u2019m not what you\u2019d call an expert\ngardener\u2014I think I\u2019d need hands for that\u2014but I\u2019m told the best time to plant\ntrees is in the spring and fall when it\u2019s not too hot out. And that\u2019s coming\nup…let me just check my calendar\u2026oh wow! That\u2019s now! OK, you better get\nplanting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
