When you think of cold weather animals, the first creature that comes to mind is probably be the powerful polar bear. These bears are the largest land carnivores (they can weigh over 1,500 lbs!) and they\u2019re built for life in the frigid north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The life of a bear<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s hard to imagine, but when polar bears are born, they\u2019re not much bigger than guinea pigs. Cubs are born during the winter and remain with their mother for two years, learning how to survive in the extreme ecosystems they call home. Luckily, they\u2019ve got some pretty neat adaptations to keep them toasty warm: their hair is hollow, they have a thick layer of fat, and they have special under-fur that helps to insulate them against the cold. To prevent heat loss, polar bears also have small, round ears and a very small tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even though they live in such remote locations, the habitat that polar bears rely on is under threat. Climate change is affecting the Arctic and the cold north more than most other places on earth; in fact, it\u2019s estimated that the Arctic is warming three times faster than the global average. And that means big trouble for the animals that rely on it, like the polar bear \u2013 but we can help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
