Hey Earth Rangers! It\u2019s Reyd reporting from Nain, Labrador, and I\u2019m super excited to share some updates from our latest Arctic research adventures! Our work is all about keeping Arctic animals and the people who depend on them safe and healthy. <\/p>\n\n\n

One of the projects we\u2019ve been working on focuses on the walrus. By studying walrus samples, we can learn a lot about their health and the environment they live in. This research is really important for northern communities who rely on these animals for food, since they don’t want to get sick!  <\/p>\n\n\n

We\u2019ve also been tracking some amazing Arctic birds to see where they travel throughout the year, and their journeys are incredible! Some gulls that breed in Nain flew all the way south to places like Texas and Mexico for the winter. That\u2019s a long trip! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also tracked black and white sea birds with bright red feet called guillemots from Nain and Postville, Labrador, and we discovered that they traveled to the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada\u2019s east coast. Meanwhile, the common eider made their way to Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence too! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another piece of great news: after an oil spill near Postville in 2020, we\u2019ve been carefully checking bird eggs and the levels of oil in them have stayed low. That\u2019s great news for not only the birds, but also for the animals like the walrus, and the people who rely on them for traditional food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite all this great news, the work is never done, and we continue to monitor Arctic wildlife closely. With more ships traveling through these waters, it\u2019s important to keep an eye on the environment and be ready to respond to any future oil spills. <\/p>\n\n\n
