About the Vancouver Aquarium Oregon spotted frog conservation efforts.

In an effort to protect this species, the Vancouver Aquarium joined the Oregon Spotted Frog Recovery Team in 2000.

In 2007, Oregon spotted frog eggs were collected to establish an aquarium-based assurance population. The first ever Oregon spotted frog breeding in an aquarium environment took place in 2010. In 2011, close to 3,000 cultured tadpoles and juvenile frogs were released into natural habitats near established populations in the wild.

In addition to the assurance population, the Oregon Spotted Frog Recovery Program includes habitat management, monitoring, research, and restoration conducted in partnership with the BC Ministry of Environment, BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations, Canadian Wildlife Service, Department of National Defense, Seabird Island Band, District of Kent, Fraser Valley Regional District, Greater Vancouver Zoo, Toronto Zoo, Mountain View Conservation Centre, Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, BC Conservation Foundation, Wildlife Preservation Canada and Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition.

About the Churchill Northern Studies Centre

Founded in 1976, the Churchill Northern Studies Centre is an independent, non-profit research and education facility located 23 km east of the town of Churchill, Manitoba. We provide accommodations, meals, equipment rentals, and logistical support to scientific researchers working on a diverse range of topics of interest to northern science. In addition to research, the Centre facilitates a wide range of educational programming ranging from general interest courses for the visiting public to university credit courses for students.

The Centre is ideally situated along the Hudson Bay seacoast at the meeting of three major biomes: marine, northern boreal forest, and tundra. To the east lies Wapusk National Park which protects the inland denning area of the polar bear. Farther to the southeast lies the Hudson Bay Lowland, the largest peatland in North America. Because of this complex of biomes, one can see a tremendous diversity of plants, birds, mammals and human cultures.

Northern Research Fund

The Northern Research Fund (NRF) enhances research conducted by scientists using the facilities and services of the CNSC. Financial assistance is available for projects that will lead to increased knowledge relevant to the people living in the north, particularly in the region around Churchill. Since its inception, the NRF has provided approximately $400,000 of direct monetary and in-kind support to more than 100 projects in the physical, biological, and social sciences. The NRF has been particularly useful in supporting the long-term monitoring of polar bears and shore birds, advancing research during the winter months and providing hands-on field experience to dozens of students.

The W. Garfield Weston Foundation

The W. Garfield Weston Foundation is a private, Canadian family foundation established in the 1950' s by Willard Garfield Weston and his wife Reta. In 1924 Garfield inherited his father' s company and during his life established baking and retail businesses throughout Canada and in many parts of the world. The founders believed that as the funds are generated through the hard work and success of his Canadian companies, grants should be given in Canada for the benefit of Canadians. For three generations the W. Garfield Weston Foundation has maintained a family tradition of supporting charitable organizations across Canada. Today the Foundation directs the majority of its funds to projects in the fields of land conservation, education, and scientific research in Canada's North.
