PSA Fall 2018

Monarch Butterflies travel nearly 4,000 km each year to spend their winters in Mexico, and preparing for this amazing journey requires a lot of energy! That’s why it’s so important that we make sure migrating monarchs have lots of good breeding and nectaring habitat available so they can continue their incredible voyage for generations and generations.

At one time, as many as 100 Piping Plover breeding pairs could be found along Ontario’s Great Lakes, but as their beach homes continued to be developed and their important habitat faced more disturbance, the plovers almost disappeared. A pair returned to Lake Huron in 2007, and with lots of hard work we hope that we’ll see many more plovers in the years to come.
