All over the world, people are starting to fight back against single-use plastic and we think that’s amazing news! Single-use plastics are not only bad for the planet because they stick around forever, they are also a danger to animals who might get trapped in them or eat them, mistaking them for food.

Last summer, the Canadian government announced that it would ban single-use plastics as early as 2021, but some provinces have decided to take action in their own hands.

Let’s take a look at what Canada’s provinces and territories are doing to help stop one of the biggest culprits: single-use plastic bags!

Alberta

Here are some of the cities, towns and municipalities that have banned plastic bags:
– Jasper (2019)
– Wetaskiwin (2019)
– Wood Buffalo (2010)

British Columbia

Here are some of the cities, towns and municipalities that have banned plastic bags:
– Courtenay (2019)
– Cumberland (2019)
– Qualicum Beach (2019)
– Rossland (2019)
– Saanich (2020)
– Salmon Arm (2019)
– Sooke (2020)
– Tofino/Ucluelet (2019)
– Victoria (2018) but this ban was recently rejected by BC’s top court. However, the mayor is planning to fight it in the Supreme Court of Canada.
The BC government is exploring the idea of banning plastic bags throughout the whole province. Way to go!

Manitoba

Here are some of the cities, towns and municipalities that have banned plastic bags:
– Leaf Rapids (2007)
– Snow Lake (2016)
– The Pas (2016)
– Thompson (2010)
The Manitoba government is also exploring the idea of banning plastic bags throughout the province. Amazing!

New Brunswick

Starting in 2020, plastic bags will be banned in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Plastic bags will be banned throughout the province in 2020.

Nova Scotia

Plastic bags will be banned throughout the province in 2020.

Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories have had a 25-cent tax on plastic bags since 2011 and they saw a 70% drop within a few years.

Nunavut

Iqaluit is discussing a ban on plastic bags.

Ontario

The province and some cities are thinking about banning plastic bags. The City of Toronto voted against a plastic bag ban in 2012, but they’ve recently started exploring the idea again.

PEI

In 2019, plastic bags were banned throughout the province.

Québec

– Montréal (2018)

Saskatchewan

Prince Albert is working on becoming the first city in the province to ban plastic bags. It’s also being discussed in Regina.

Yukon

The Yukon government has surveyed people of the territories and is reviewing the results in order to decide between a fee for bags and a ban.
