It’s REally important to REthink some of our habits when it comes to throwing things away. That’s because litter is a BIG problem everywhere! Take the Great Lakes region, for example: every year, more than 20 MILLION pounds of litter end up in these important waterways. This can happen when trash or recycling isn’t secured properly or closed tightly, allowing wind to blow it away and pollute the water, hurting the animals that live there. Less trash at the landfill means less litter, which is why it’s so important to stop the problem before it starts!

WHAT’S BEING DONE TO HELP?

Some states, like Michigan, are working to throw away less food by donating extras to schools and food banks. Ohio is helping businesses and restaurants compost food scraps instead of tossing them. These are GREAT ways to reduce food waste. On top of that, recycling programs all across the Great Lakes states are being expanded to keep even more materials out of the landfill. These big steps are going a long way to helping solve the trouble with trash!

WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME?

But let’s not stop there! YOU can help too! Learn what goes in the trash and what goes in the recycling. Every city has different rules for what is and what isn’t recyclable. If too much of the wrong stuff ends up in the recycling bin, it might get sent to the dump instead.
