Thanks to amazing Earth Rangers like you, tons of important conservation work happened this past year at the Bunchgrass Hills Conservation Area in British Columbia! By adopting a beaver or bumblebee, you’ve helped support our partner, Sarah, and her team at the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) as they worked to protect one of Canada’s most special ecosystems: grasslands.

Sarah is a scientist who spends her days exploring nature, studying habitats, and finding ways to protect wildlife. Her work is a great example of how girls can grow up to be scientists, researchers, and conservation leaders. Whether you love animals, asking questions, or discovering how the natural world works, there is a place for everyone in science!
Sarah’s work shows that science isn’t just about collecting facts: it’s also about curiosity, creativity, and making discoveries that help our planet. By studying nature and working with others to protect wildlife, Sarah is helping create a healthier future for animals and inspiring the next generation of girls in science.
Why grasslands?
Grasslands may not always get as much attention as forests or oceans, but they are incredibly important. In fact, less than 1% of B.C.’s landcover is composed of native grasslands. These unique habitats provide homes for lots of different animals, help fight climate change, protect water, and support pollinators like bumblebees.
Bunchgrass Hills is a huge grassland conservation area that protects thousands of hectares of grasslands, forests, and wetlands. It’s home to many incredible species, including American badgers, bats, birds, and important pollinators.
So, what’s been happening this year?
With support from Earth Rangers, Sarah and her conservation team have been helping keep these habitats healthy. They installed fencing (over 1 kilometre of it, in fact!) around sensitive wetlands to protect these important areas from damage. This is important because healthy wetlands provide food, water, and shelter for wildlife like beavers and bumblebees that depend on thriving grassland ecosystems.
The team also added signs throughout the conservation area to help visitors learn about the land and explore responsibly while protecting the habitats many animals call home.
This is just the beginning! Sarah and her team will continue caring for Bunchgrass Hills through habitat restoration, invasive plant management, and ongoing stewardship. Thanks to Earth Rangers like you, this incredible landscape will continue to be a safe home for wildlife for years to come.
