Myth-buster Challenge
5 Ways Myth-busters Can Help the Environment This World Environment Day
World Environment Day is all about celebrating our amazing planet, and here at Earth Rangers we think the best way to do that is to help find ways to protect it! If you’ve already joined the Myth-busters Challenge, you’re already doing just that! Still not on our team of climate champs? Learn more about what being a myth-buster is all about here, then head to the Challenges Section to join in!
Here are five ways Myth-busters habits help our planet, today and every day:
1. Saving Energy Makes a Big Difference
Some might say electronics don’t use energy when they’re turned off, but myth-busters know the truth and are ready to tame the Power Gobbler! Many devices still use power when they’re plugged in, which means that when you unplug electronics or turn off power strips, you help save energy – and greenhouse gases from being produced.
2. Wasting Less Food Helps the Planet
Throwing food in the trash might seem harmless, but it actually creates greenhouse gases in landfills that then get released into the atmosphere, where they contribute to climate change. The Organic Ogre wants you to ignore this! Myth-busters help by finishing what’s on their plate, saving and reusing leftovers, or composting their food scraps. Every bite you save makes a big difference for the planet!
3. Outsmarting the Fake News Fox: Easy!
Not everything you see on TV or online is true – and this is especially the case when it comes to climate change. The Fake News Fox loves to spread confusing information, but myth-busters know how to find the right stuff. They make sure their information is from places that use science and research to back their facts – places like schools, scientists, museums, environmental organizations, or government websites (like Environment and Climate Change Canada) – and they’re always ready to ask it out when in doubt (with a trusted adult, of course). Learning the truth helps you make smarter choices and helps the planet too!
4. Protecting Our Water Protects Our Future
Water might seem endless, but it isn’t – and climate change is making water harder to find in some places. Myth-busters help by taking shorter showers, turning off taps, and using water wisely. Saving water today helps protect it for the future, since there really is no Forever Fountain!
5. Helping Plants and Animals Thrive = Big Win for Biodiversity
Biodiversity means all the different living things on planet Earth, from animals and plants to insects and fungi. The places all these organisms live together in are called ecosystems, and besides living together they also work together to keep their homes healthy. More biodiverse ecosystems are better able to stand up to, and bounce back from, changes like extreme weather or other disturbances – but they need our help too to keep them healthy! Removing invasive species, planting flowers for pollinators, and respecting nature while we enjoy it are all important actions we can take to do our part and banish the Biodiversity Bandit.
This World Environment Day, remember: you don’t have to do everything — just do something. By busting myths and building smart habits, Myth-busters show that when kids work together, they can help protect the planet every single day!
