Battery Collection Tips
Used batteries are out there for you to find. Here are some winning tips to help you get the grand prize!
Winning starts at home
Ask your parents if there’s a place where they keep old batteries. The ‘junk drawer’ is usually a great source, and so is the garage. But don’t forget the kitchen; the basement, etc. Get the whole family in on the hunt!
Hold a Battery Drive
You can safely involve your entire community by having a drive-through battery collection afternoon! Advertise when and where you will be collecting, get some volunteers together, and watch those batteries start to pile up! This is a strategy used by winning schools in the past!
Don’t forget your devices
You’ve probably got a few devices with old batteries inside, just waiting to be recycled. It could be remote controls that power your TVs or old toys that have batteries in them.
Keep it safe
Congratulations, you’re a superstar collector! Bring those batteries in to your school as soon as possible, but in the meantime, store them in a cool dry container (not made of metal!)
Get the extended family involved
Ask your grandparents, aunts/uncles or other family members; they would probably be happy to get rid of their old batteries, especially when it’s for a good cause!
Don’t hold ‘em; send ‘em in!
Your school has special boxes to collect and ship your batteries. If you fill up a box; get someone to send it in right away! The contest has a time limit and the sooner you send in a box, the sooner you can send in the next box!
All in a day’s work
Places of work can be a great source for old batteries! Maybe a relative works in a field that uses lots of batteries. A friendly workplace email from your mom or dad could help you start collecting batteries from many households. This strategy is a winner!
Social Media is your friend
The prizes are great – but don’t forget you’re doing a great thing; and people should know about it! Ask your parents to let you share your collection efforts on their social media and encourage followers to give them their old batteries for your school to recycle.
Ask your neighbours
It’s simple to ask - “Hey, got any old batteries lying around? My school is recycling them.” Folks will be happy you’re solving a problem for them.
Enjoy the process and keep at it
Collecting batteries is something you can do for planet Earth that is 100% positive, 100% free, and it gives you a great sense of satisfaction. Give yourself a pat on the back, and then get out there to find more batteries!
