Lunch with Luna and Eclipse

Why, hello, Earth Rangers! I’m Luna the crow and you caught me at a great time. I was just about to help my squirrel friend, Eclipse, find something to eat! Won’t you join us?

We’re just heading over to the recycling bin to see what’s on the menu. What? You expected us to find food ourselves…in the forest? But that’s hard! This is so much easier.

What do you mean recycling bins aren’t a restaurant? Well, Eclipse’s nose is telling us otherwise. You know those jars of peanut butter and pasta sauce? They smell delicious!

Now, I know that going through trash isn’t safe. I’m going to do my best to keep Eclipse from getting into trouble! There are lots of things in these recycling bins that are dangerous for animals. Sometimes, jars and containers can have bits of food left in them. Then, someone like Eclipse smells it, pokes her head in to get the leftovers, and gets stuck. It’s not a pretty sight!

Wait…you don’t want us to go through your stuff? Like at all? Oops…you might need to get better lids for your compost and garbage cans then. I know some clever raccoons, opossums, skunks, and bears who can easily open these up. A tightly-fitting lid with clips would definitely make it harder for us to get into and we’d probably just end up foraging somewhere else. You may also want to try:

  • Washing out food containers REALLY well.
  • Making a trash enclosure, with your family’s help, of course!
  • Fixing any holes in your bin so we can’t squeeze in.

HEY ECLIPSE! DROP THAT RIGHT NOW.

Do you see that thing Eclipse has in her mouth? She must have smelled the food on it. If those edges are sharp, it can be super dangerous for her. Imagine if I wasn’t here to protect her? Help us by Respect(ing) Animals While Recycling (RAWR)!
