Someone is screaming in the dark… and it’s LOUD. We’re pretty sure it’s a bird—possibly a kiwi—but that only makes this stranger. Why all the noise? Why all the cameras? And who’s keeping such a close eye on these wingless birds? Let’s solve this mystery, Earth Rangers.
Special thanks to our friends at Ōtorohanga Kiwi House for sharing their story! Check out their socials at @OtoKiwiHouse
Ōtorohanga Kiwi House

What’s cute, small, and brown, and makes an extraordinarily strange noise when looking for a mate? It’s the brown kiwi, a flightless bird native to New Zealand! The unique brown kiwi have tiny wings, no tail, and they’re nocturnal. Unfortunately, these special birds make a quick meal for non-native predators like cats, dogs, and stoats, so their numbers have been declining in the wild.
That’s where the good people at Ōtorohanga Kiwi House step in to save the day. Thanks to the hard work of kind keepers, the brown kiwi that call Ōtorohanga Kiwi House home get to live in a predator-free sanctuary. They’re safe to live their lives and raise families of their own. In fact, Kiwi House has released over 500 birds back into the wild – amazing!
We want to give a huge Earth Rangers high five to the incredible people caring for the brown kiwi birds at Ōtorohanga Kiwi House!
