The marmots living on Vancouver Island are incredible whistlers—but they’re also in big trouble, because they’re one of the most endangered mammals on Earth. Not long ago, there were fewer than 30 of these rare ground squirrels left in the entire world! Luckily, a team of animal scientists have a plan to save them using special nest boxes—and a helicopter! Will their plan work… or will these musical mountain dwellers disappear forever?

The Marmot Recovery Foundation

Vancouver Island marmots might just be some of the cutest rodents around, but too not long ago, we discovered something terrible: there were fewer than 30 left in the wild! Thankfully, the good people at the Marmot Recovery Foundation stepped in and worked hard to help the Vancouver Island marmots successfully repopulate.
Through careful breeding programs, the Marmot Recovery Foundation is able to release the babies born in captivity back into the wild. These amazing conservationists and wildlife biologists also help marmots feel more at home by providing supplemental food, helping to restore their habitats, and monitoring their numbers. The Vancouver Island marmots say a big thank you to this amazing team.
