Meet Our Peculiar Animal Halloween Contest Winners!
Our What a Peculiar Animal! Halloween Contest challenged Earth Rangers Classes to dream up brand-new animals using real-life adaptations. We asked you to imagine creatures with amazing ways to survive, and you brewed up a frightfully fantastic bunch of Peculiar Animals!
We received so many incredible entries from classrooms across Canada. From sharp jaws to terrific tails your imaginations ran wild! Every Peculiar Animal showed thoughtful ideas about how animals use their adaptations to find food, stay safe, and survive in their habitats.
A huge thank you to every student and teacher who participated. We loved seeing your creativity, curiosity, and love for wildlife shine.
Now it’s time to meet this year’s winners!
Grand Prize Winners

Class: Autumn Taha’s Grade 5 Class (John A Mcdougall School, Edmonton, AB)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Winged Quill BBit
What makes this creature so special?
“The winged quill is originally a flying squirrel with the adaptations of a rabbit and a porcupine. It has sharp claws to help it dig into the trees and ground to find insects to eat. Its long ears will keep it cool through the heat of the Misty Jungle. Their wings store venom. It has quills on its tail that it can use to protect itself from predators.”

Class: Laura Stefan’s Grade 1 Class (Holy Spirit School, Cochrane, AB)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Frad
What makes this creature so special?
Meet Frad! With curly horns like a bighorn sheep, a hump like a dromedary camel, a giraffe’s long neck, and the face of a cat, Frad is truly one of a kind! He also has cheetah spots, an elephant leg, and a serpent for a tail. This class couldn’t choose just one amazing animal, so they decided to combine a little bit of everything!
Because Frad’s legs are different lengths, he walks with an uneven stride. But that doesn’t stop him! He reminds the class of Terry Fox because, no matter the challenge, he keeps moving forward with determination.
At night, Frad’s serpent tail goes “swish, swish!” through the grass. You might think a spooky monster is approaching, but surprise! It’s just Frad looking for a friend. Even when he tries to hide, his curly horns always give him away!
With such a unique look, Frad doesn’t even need a Halloween costume. He already looks like nobody else!
With Frad, this amazing class wants to remind everyone that every animal is special. Animals don’t have to be cute or cuddly to deserve our help. Whether big or small, furry or scaly, they all deserve a safe home!

Class: Karin MacPherson’s Grade 1 Class (St. Mary – St. Cecilia School, Morrisburg, ON)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Crociflyer
What makes this creature so special?
“The crociflyer can fly with its eagle wings and get off the land. It has a long rattlesnake tail to warn humans of danger. The body and the head are both from the crocodile to look cooler.”
Some of Our Spookiest (and Coolest!) Creations
These Peculiar Animals caught our attention with their creepy, creative, and clever adaptations!

Class: Nina Martzoukos’ Grade 4 Class (Holy Spirit School, Cochrane, AB)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Bumble Ferret
What makes this creature so special?
“Meet Bumble Ferret, my peculiar animal! She is part black footed ferret and part bee. She has a black mask, black bifeet, a lang tail and a yellow body with black stripes. Her blue wings go BZZZZ when she flies! She carries pollen in little baskets on her back legs. She takes it from flower to flower. Sometimes the pollen tickles her nose. AcHoo. Her antennae wiggle when she sneezes! On Halloween, she does not need a costume because she already has a mask! I made Bumble ferret because I care about ferrets and bees. They both need a safe place to live. My creature reminds people to protect grasslands and plant flowers.”

Class: Bryan Cornwell’s Grade 3/4 Class (Alcuin College, North Vancouver, BC)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Gopuladoof
What makes this creature so special?
“The Gopuladoof has adapted to its tropical rainforest environment because it has strong back legs for jumping, hard boney front legs that don’t get hurt when attacked, and spikes on its body for protection from predators. It has a strong jaw and sharp teeth to crush shells and bones of its prey, and thermal sensing tentacles on its tail to detect food and danger!”

Class: Esther Lung’s Grade 2/3 Class (John English JMS, Etobicoke, ON)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Quokkie
What makes this creature so special?
Using an AI image generator, this clever class created Quokkie. It has the tail of a quokka to store its food and the teeth of a sabertooth to help tear food. It has the body of a gecko and axolotl for camouflage and the ability to lay thousands of eggs to increase its chances of survival and the legs of a tiger so it can run fast. Because it is so cute, it will win everyone’s hearts which will help it survive where people live.

Class: Benjamin Desforges et Jacob Desgagnés’ Grade 5 Class (Ayer’s Cliff Elementary School, Ayer’s Cliff, QC)
Peculiar Animal Ambassador: Tralaleo Tralala
What makes this creature so special?
This class’s unique creation, the Tralaleo Tralala, shows how different adaptations help animals move, find food, and survive in their environments! Using its powerful fins and tail, it can swim between islands and dive deep underwater to catch crabs. When it wants coconuts, it uses its strong jaws to bite down trees and collect them. Its jaws are even powerful enough to bite into an alligator’s fat body!
Thank You, Earth Rangers Classes!
