A Kid's Guide to Nature Photography

Have you ever spotted something amazing outside and wished you could capture it forever?

The good news is that you don't need fancy equipment to take incredible nature photos. Whether you're using a camera, tablet, or smartphone, the secret to great photography is learning to slow down, observe, and capture the world around you in a creative way.

Ready to become a nature photographer? Here are some tips to help you get started!

Start by Exploring

The best nature photos often happen when you're curious. Head outside and explore a natural space near you. This could be your backyard, a local park, a hiking trail, a pond, or even a garden. As you explore, try to slow down and really notice what's around you.

Ask yourself:

  • What catches my eye?
  • What colours, shapes, or patterns do I notice?
  • Is anything moving?
  • What makes this place feel special?
Remember: Nature can be found almost anywhere!

Get Close and Look Carefully

Some of the most interesting nature photos aren't of huge landscapes. They're tiny moments that most people walk right past.

Try looking for:

Busy bees and butterflies Mushrooms and moss Interesting leaves and flowers Animal tracks Birds and squirrels Patterns in rocks, bark, or water

Getting a little closer can reveal details that make your photo feel unique and exciting.

Try Different Angles

Instead of taking every photo from standing height, experiment with different perspectives.

Try:

  • Kneeling down low to photograph a flower or insect
  • Looking up at a tree from underneath
  • Moving closer to your subject
  • Taking a few steps back to capture more of the scene
Sometimes changing your angle by just a few centimeters can completely transform a photo.

Use Natural Light

Light can make a big difference in your photos. Try taking pictures:

☀️

In the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer

☁️

On cloudy days, when shadows are less harsh

🌅

During sunrise or sunset for beautiful colours

If possible, avoid taking photos in bright midday sunlight, which can create strong shadows and make details harder to see.

Keep Your Camera Steady

Blurry photos happen to everyone! To help keep your photos sharp:

  • Hold your camera or phone with both hands
  • Rest your elbows against your body
  • Lean against a tree or rock if you need extra support
  • Take several photos so you have lots to choose from
Professional photographers often take hundreds of photos to get the perfect shot!

Tell a Story

The best nature photos make us feel something. Before you take a picture, ask yourself:

  • Why do I want to photograph this?
  • What do I find interesting or beautiful about it?
  • What story am I trying to tell?

Maybe your photo shows how peaceful a forest feels. Maybe it captures an animal doing something funny. Or maybe it reminds you of a special moment you had outdoors.

Your perspective is what makes your photo unique.

Be Respectful of Nature

Great nature photographers protect the places and animals they photograph. Remember to:

  • Observe wildlife from a safe distance
  • Stay on marked trails whenever possible
  • Leave plants, rocks, and habitats where you found them
  • Never chase, feed, or disturb animals
  • Leave nature just as beautiful as you found it

Most Importantly: Have Fun!

Nature photography isn't about having the fanciest camera or taking the "perfect" picture. It's about slowing down, exploring the outdoors, and noticing amazing things that others might miss.

So grab your camera, head outside, and start exploring. You never know what incredible nature moment you'll discover!
